"It’s Hot Out Here, Baby!"

Can hot weather affect my neurodivergent (ND) tendencies? The answer is: absolutely yes.

Temperature can have a soothing, positive effect for some, and a draining, negative impact for others. If your spirit animal is a lizard who loves basking on hot sand all day—enjoy! You're in for a treat.

But don’t forget to reset your reminders (especially if you use ADHD-friendly apps) to nudge you to drink water more frequently than usual. Hydration is key!

To avoid that post-meal sleepiness, opt for lighter food choices—especially if you’re autistic and have a less sensitive interoception system (that’s the sense that tells you what’s going on inside your body).

Now, if you identify more with a polar bear than a desert lizard, it’s time to adjust your routine. Saying “no” to BBQs and beach gatherings is completely okay. Your comfort matters.

Here are a few tips for staying cool and regulated:

  • Chill your weighted blanket in the fridge for a refreshing bedtime experience.
  • Use cooling pads and drink cool (not ice-cold) water—extreme cold can actually backfire and make you feel hotter.
  • Be aware that increased temperatures can elevate agitation and anxiety, especially for those with sensory sensitivities.

Take care of yourself, whatever your weather style is. Your needs are valid, and your comfort is worth prioritising.

Best wishes
